Why does volume variance across a roll matter?
Uneven cell volume across the roll face means uneven ink transfer, which shows as colour differences across the printed width. Checking three points catches drift before it reaches the press; measuring five gives an even more accurate picture.
How much volume variance is acceptable?
A common rule of thumb is 5% between the highest and lowest reading. It is only a rule of thumb; if the job or the roll specification sets its own tolerance, that figure wins.
How is anilox volume actually measured?
With a 3D scanning microscope that images the engraved cells and calculates volume from the measured geometry. Because the roll can be measured in place, volume and wear can be tracked over its whole life.
