What does “theoretical volume” mean?
It is the ink volume a standard 60° hexagonal engraving would hold at a given line screen and engraving depth, taken from published chart data. It describes the engraving geometry, not any individual roll.
Why can a real roll measure differently from the theoretical value?
Engraving processes differ between manufacturers, and cells wear and plug in service, so a used roll usually carries less than the chart figure. Measuring the roll is the only way to know what it actually delivers.
What is a hex 60° engraving?
It is the most common anilox cell pattern: hexagonal cells arranged in rows at 60 degrees to the roll axis. The layout packs cells tightly and releases ink evenly, which is why most volume charts assume it.
